Impermanence
Life is in a state of constant flux! Sometimes it feels like the fluctuations never stop. People move from one place to another. The culture keeps changing, and the environment follows closely. Sometimes when I visit old haunts where I used to live, they seem foreign. It feels like they moved on, and I moved on, too (often in different directions). Sometimes, I am perplexed. The changes give an air of impermanence to everything. You could be here today and having the time of your life (or the worst period); tomorrow, everything has changed.
Well, I figured instead of perplexity, I needed a better response. In my short life, I have concluded that nothing lasts forever. Obvious right? Well, it is more experiential now. Therefore, I have chosen, first of all, to savor the moment! It never lasts, but at least I can live in it and be grateful for the privilege of living in that moment. When it is gone, there’s no point trying to recapture it. It would feel like a fake — a cheap substitute even if I recaptured it.
Further, I have decided that it is best to move on when you move on. I will keep the memories from the moments I savored but look ahead, not backward. The advantage is two-fold. This step is essential so I don’t miss the new moments I’m experiencing. But also, I don’t waste time chasing shadows and trying to recapture past moments.
Finally, regardless of what is going on, I have learned that gratefulness is the best way to enjoy the moment. I approach every moment, time, and friendship with a grateful heart. I am thankful I got the opportunity to experience it and move on when it is done.
Selah!
